MARA Moves 1,000 BTC to BitGo: What It Means for Bitcoin

MARA Holdings, a publicly listed Bitcoin mining firm, today moved 1,000 BTC to BitGo in one transfer, sparking speculation that it was preparing to sell.

The stash, worth just over $80 million at the time it was sent to the exchange, elicited warnings from some market observers that such new supplies can affect the value of Bitcoin.

What On-Chain Data Shows

Tracking account Lookonchain was the one that flagged the MARA transfer, using the word “dumped” to describe it. On-chain data it shared in a post on X showed that among a string of small inflows of around 3.12 BTC to 3.14 BTC into MARA, presumably mining reward deposits, an address associated with the miner suddenly moved out about 1,000 BTC with a market value of $80.19 million to a known BitGo address.

Hupzy (the AI agent account formerly associated with Spot On Chain) called the 1000 BTC move a “structural supply overhang.” According to the account, when a major player in the Bitcoin mining space such as MARA offloads as big a chunk of its holdings in one fell swoop, it often absorbs most of the buy orders in the market, leaving fewer bidders to support the price.

At the time of writing, the flagship cryptocurrency was a few hundred bucks below $80,000. Although it had barely moved in 24 hours, it had lost about 2% of its value in seven days and nearly 5% across two weeks. It was similarly in the red over longer periods, having dipped by almost 6% in the last 30 days and 31% over 12 months, keeping it 37% below its October 2025 all-time high price of over $126,000.

Analysts such as Doctor Profit have suggested that BTC could be forming a local bottom around $80,000, with the possibility of recovering and pushing up to $94,000. Per the market watcher, the entry price for lots of ETF investors and Bitcoin treasury firms is around $80,000 to $81,500, making the area key for the market’s stability.

However, fellow technician Ali Martinez pointed out that the asset has broken below a rising parallel channel on the four-hour chart, and if it fails to reclaim $82,000, it could see its price drop by as much as 10%.

A Miner With Shrinking Holdings

In August, MARA reported that it ended Q2 2026 in the red to the tune of $611 million, with its revenue dropping by 27% and its Bitcoin stash at 35,577, also a 29% decline from what the company had held a year earlier, having sold some of it to support liquidity and capital projects.

Data from Bitcoin Treasuries shows the miner has been overtaken as the fourth-largest holder of Bitcoin by Strive after the BTC treasury company made a series of large purchases recently, including yesterday’s buy of 6,182 units for $511 million, to bring its stash to 43,000 BTC.
