XRP sellers face massive slip as USD order book depth fakes size
Quick Take
- At the Nov. 4 close, the sampled Bitstamp-dollar book had 56,887 funded tokens against 1.28 million quoted.
- A modeled 10,000-XRP sale returned 12,684 Bitstamp USD tokens or 13,052 RLUSD at Nov. 5's ledger, before additional costs.
- Issuer-redemption conditions, funded offer sizes and separate AMM pools shape what these capped XRP-sale estimates mean for holders.
An XRP Ledger order book sample advertised 1.28 million Bitstamp-issued USD tokens at the Nov. 4 close, but the offer owners' balances funded only about 57,000.
For an XRP holder selling into those offers, the headline quantity overstated the token inventory available to trade.
The smaller sample for dollar stablecoin Ripple USD (RLUSD) held about 92,000 funded tokens, with no gap between quoted and funded amounts at that ledger.
A Nov. 5 refresh, at ledger 108132129, closed at 13:09 UTC, still showed a large Bitstamp-dollar gap of roughly 1.31 million tokens quoted against 58,179 funded. RLUSD had about 80,435 quoted and 75,726 funded, so its earlier fully funded reading had not persisted.
One offer explains almost the entire gap
The Nov. 4 reading covered validated ledger 108120236, closed at 23:59:51 UTC. Bitstamp-issued USD offers totaled 1,280,737 tokens quoted and 56,887 funded, a funded share of 4.44%.
One offer advertised 1,241,760 USD tokens while its funded amount was only 17,967. That single offer accounted for almost the entire difference, showing why adding advertised order sizes can mislead about what a counterparty can deliver.
The measurement requests at most 100 offers per side and counts quantities within 10% of each book's own reference midpoint, derived from its tightest uncrossed bid and ask. NOSHASHI, the ledger-data service, calls the dollar-token side that XRP sellers receive the “ask.”
XRPL's offer rules allow an owner to advertise more than it currently holds because placing an offer does not lock its full amount. The official book offers interface normally omits unfunded offers and identifies partially funded amounts, so software can distinguish advertised size from supported size.
Big quoted offer. Small funded slice.
An oversized Bitstamp USD offer drove the November 4 gap. Compare both book samples at the next day's measured ledger.
A larger advertised book can contain less funded token inventory for XRP sellers.

Different issuer-token units, not interchangeable bank dollars. Capped samples do not measure all XRP liquidity or guarantee near-best-price execution. AMM reserves are excluded. The single-offer diagram is November 4 only; the date selector changes the complete two-book comparison below.
Method: Reported token quantities rounded to nearest whole token. The single-offer bar is funded/quoted = 17,967.2209361063/1,241,760 = 1.4469%, shown as 1.45%. Book bars share a linear 0 to 1.4 million token-unit scale; funded shares use unrounded inputs and two decimals. Each dated sample requests at most 100 offers per side within 10% of its own reference mid.
Bitstamp's IOU explanation describes redemption through the issuing platform and an account there. A holder's access to US dollars' redemption still depends on the applicable account and issuer conditions.
RLUSD's user terms name Standard Custody & Trust Company LLC as issuer, so direct redemption with Ripple requires being an eligible Customer under a separate agreement. Receiving either token on-ledger differs from receiving spendable dollars in a bank account.
What a fixed-size XRP sale could return
Using the Nov. 5 ledger, a static model swept funded offers in price order for a 10,000-XRP sale. A separate model used each automated market maker (AMM), which trades against pool reserves, applying its ordinary trading fee in a constant-product calculation.
| Isolated route | Modeled tokens received for 10,000 XRP |
|---|---|
| Sampled Bitstamp USD order book | 12,684 USD tokens |
| Sampled RLUSD order book | 13,052 RLUSD |
| Bitstamp USD AMM pool | 3,404 USD tokens |
| RLUSD AMM pool | 12,973 RLUSD |
The book estimates use the 100-offer cap and 10% band. Pool estimates include ordinary AMM trading fees, and all four exclude additional issuer-transfer, network, and redemption costs, as well as wallet and trust-line constraints.
In the same model, a 50,000-XRP sale exhausted the sampled Bitstamp-dollar offers after about 47,484 XRP, returning 58,179 USD tokens and leaving 2,516 XRP unsold. The sampled RLUSD offers absorbed the modeled 50,000 XRP for about 64,960 RLUSD.
The RLUSD AMM held about 1.83 million XRP and 2.39 million RLUSD, versus only about 3,489 XRP and 4,594 USD tokens in the Bitstamp-dollar pool.
Quoted size, funded inventory, and completed trading volume answer different questions. For a seller, the useful test is a refreshed estimate for the intended size and acceptable issuer token, including the costs and redemption access needed to turn that token into cash.
